Panthers suffer pair of losses

WAMEGO — Struggling to put it all together, the Concordia High School baseball team suffered two losses in the North Central Kansas League/Mid-East League showdown on Thursday.
Concordia committed eight errors and gave up 10 unearned runs in falling 9-3 to St. Mary's and 12-7 to Silver Lake.
“Our pitching improved, but we didn't play good enough defense,” Concordia coach Brandt Hutchinson said. “We need to play better in all three phases and not just two out of three.”
St. Mary's scored two runs in the top of the first inning and would not trail against the Panthers.
The Bears tacked on one run in the second inning, two in the third and two in the fourth to open up a 7-0 advantage.
Shut out on one hit through the first four innings, the Panthers would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Joey Henderson led off the inning with a single. He stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball.
Stryker Hake was hit by a pitch and came around to score in the inning.
Maddox Frey walked and would score the third run on a passed ball.
St. Mary's added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it 9-3.
Concordia was limited to just four hits in the game, two by Henderson and two by Dalton Owen.
Hake pitched the first five innings and took the loss. He gave up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits, struck out eight and walked four.
Henderson allowed two unearned runs on two hits in two innings. He struck out two.
The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead on Silver Lake in the second inning.
Nathan Brown walked with two out and scored on a double by Dustin Sterrett.
Silver Lake scored two runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the top of the fifth to go up 5-1.
Concordia pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-3 game.
Payton Breese reached base on a fielder's choice and Hake doubled.
A base hit by Dalton Owen got two runs home.
Silver Lake extended the lead to 8-3 with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Brown doubled and Drew Benfer drove him in at the bottom of the sixth, and the Panthers trailed 8-4.
Taking advantage of three errors, the Eagles added four runs in the top of the seventh inning to open up a 12-4 advantage.
Concordia scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-7.
Owen led off with a single and Maddox Frey doubled.
Brown walked to load the bases with one out.
Sterrett and Benfer singled home runs and Brown scored on an error.
Braeden Primeaux gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits, struck out three and walked three in five innings in taking the loss.
Shelby Giersch pitched an inning and a third and surrendered seven runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two.
Benfer struck out one and walked one in two-thirds of an inning.
Sterrett was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in.
Owen had two hits and drove in two runs and Benfer knocked in two runs.
