Panthers suffer pair of losses to Rock Creek

Free passes proved to be a problem for the Concordia High School baseball team in a pair of losses to Rock Creek High School last Friday at the Concordia Sports Complex.

Rock Creek, ranked second in Class 4A, drew 19 walks on its way to defeating Concordia 10-4 in the first game of the doubleheader and 5-0 in the second game.

Two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning put Rock Creek on top to stay in game one of the twinbill.

Payton Breese reached base on an error and scored on a single by Maddox Frey in the bottom of the first and Concordia trailed 2-1.

Rock Creek made it a 3-1 game with a run in the top of the third inning.

Two runs in the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth gave the Mavericks a 7-1 advantage.

Caleb Hanson singled with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. He stole second and scored on a single by Braeden Primeaux to make it a 7-2 game.

Rock Creek added three runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10-2.

The Panthers put up two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Dustin Sterrett led off the inning with a walk and Drew Sterrett reached back on an error.

Joey Henderson doubled to drive in two runs.

Primeaux pitched the first three innings in taking the loss for Concordia. He gave up three runs on six hits, struck out five and walked one.

Hanson allowed seven runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked seven in three and a third innings.

Henderson did not allow a run or hit in two-thirds of an inning. He also drove in two runs.

Rock Creek took advantage of 14 walks in shutting out the Panthers in game two.

The game was scoreless through two innings.

Rock Creek scored four runs on one hit, five walks and a hit batter in the top of the third inning.

Tacking on one run on two walks, a stolen base and a passed ball in the fifth inning, the Mavericks led 5-0.

Attempting to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, Concordia got back-to-back singles by Primeaux and Keegun Beims with two out.

Dustin Sterrett followed with a single, but Primeaux was thrown out at home to end the game.

Chane Parker pitched two and two-thirds innings in suffering the loss. He surrendered three runs on no hits, struck out three and walked six.

Breese gave up two runs on two hits, struck out one and walked six in two and two-thirds innings.

Beims pitched one and a third scoreless innings. He walked two.
