T-Birds knock off Vikings, 73-57

COUNCIL BLUFFS , Iowa — Outscoring Jefferson (Mo.) College 42-24 in the second and third quarters combined, the Cloud County Community College women's basketball posted a 73-57 victory in the first round of the Hampton Inn Reiver Classic, hosted by Iowa Western Community College, on Friday.
Cloud County had a slim 16-13 lead after one quarter of play.
The Thunderbirds poured in 23 points in the second period, and limited the Vikings to 11 points, to extend the lead to 39-24 at halftime.
Cloud County tacked on 20 points in the third quarter, to 13 for Jefferson, to make it a 59-37 game.
The Vikings would outscore the T-Birds 20-14 to make the final margin of victory 16 points.
Sophomore Scout Frame led the way for Cloud County with 24 points. She was 10 of 13 from the field and three of four from the free throw line and also grabbed nine rebounds.
“We got her the basketball in some good positions to score. She ran the floor well and she was active,” Cloud County coach Brett Erkenbrack said of Frame, “We wanted to try to get the ball inside against Jefferson because we thought we had an advantage there.”
Freshman Lydia Ostenson scored 11 points for the T-Birds. She was five of eight from the field.
Mikaela Meyers made all three of her field goal attempts and three of three free throws in scoring nine points off  the bench.
“Mikaela and Lydia gave us a lift coming off the bench,” Erkenbrack said, “I thought they settled the game for us and created some more opportunities in the open floor.”
Cloud County shot 49 percent (28 of 57) from the field and 85 percent (11 of 13) from the free throw line.
Briar Johnson paced Jefferson College with 20 points. Tyra Brown added 13 points.
The Vikings were 22 of 46 from the floor for 48 percent and 7 of 12 from the line for 58 percent.
Iowa Western Community College got past Western Nebraska Community College 80-75 in the other game played on Friday.
