Three Concordia wrestlers qualify for state tournament

LINDSBORG — Concordia High School sophomore Hunter Schroeder is returning to the Class 4A state wrestling tournament and will be accompanied by teammates Jordan Anguish and Sajen Kemling.
Schroeder earned a second straight trip to state by placing second in the 160-pound class at the 4A regional tournament hosted by Smoky Valley High School on Friday and Saturday.
Anguish, a junior competing in the 113-pound class, qualified for state for the first time by placing second at regionals.
Kemling, a sophomore, finished fourth in the in the 106-pound class to advance to state for the first time.
The state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.
Concordia finished ninth as a team in the regional tournament with 56 points.
Marsyville captured the team title with 226.5 points. Abilene was second with 168 and Holton was third with 149.
Schroeder (32-6) received a bye in the first round. He then needed just 13 seconds to pin Jon Heinen, Holton.
Advancing to the semifinals, Schroeder won an 8-4 decision over Caleb Jeanneret, Santa Fe Trail.
Top-seeded Noah Ackerman, Marysville, pinned Schroeder in the second period in the championship match.
Anguish, after a bye in the first round, needed just 53 seconds to pin Spencer Bard, Rock Creek, in the quarterfinals. He defeated Stephen Baldwin, Russell, 8-4 in the semifinals.
William Stroda, Abilene, won a narrow 2-0 decision over Anguish (25-14) in the title match.
Kemling (24-11) pinned Gavin Shoup, Rock Creek, in 1:20 in the first round. He then lost by fall to eventual runnerup Rhett Koppes, Clay Center, in the semifinals.
In the consolation bracket, Kemling pinned Kai Barton, Marysville, in 1:44.
Kaleb Stroda, Abilene, defeated Kemling 7-1 in the third-place match.
Concordia junior Eastan Hake and freshman Keyan Miller came within one win each of qualifying for state.
Hake, 145 pounds, was pinned by Austin Wuthnow, Abilene in the opening round. He won a 7-3 decision over Bryce Isabell, Santa Fe Trail.
Moving into the consolation semifinals, Hake dropped a 7-5 decision to Hunter Nold, Rock Creek.
Miller, 152 pounds, received a bye and then lost a 3-1 decision to Caden Pfeifer, Russell.
Dropping into the consolation bracket, Miller pinned Elijah Grenot, Rock Creek, and got past Drake Siebert, Wamego, 1-0.
Zach Jeanneret, Santa Fe Trail, defeated Miller 5-3 in the consolation semifinals.
Concordia had junior Layton Kindel pick up one win in the tournament.
Kindel, 170 pounds, pinned Cody Wanklyn, Wamego, in 11 seconds in the first round.
Dakotah Whiteley, Abilene, who went on to place first, pinned Kindel in the quarterfinals.
Kindel received a bye in the consolation bracket, and was the beaten 11-6 by Bryce Garrison, Royal Valley.
Toby Wahlmeier, 126 pounds, received a bye in the first round. He lost by fall to Drew Brown, Wamego, and then lost by fall to Bryar Barnett, Royal Valley.
Cade Anderson, 132 pounds, was pinned by Jakob Snellings, Marysville. He forfeited to Kyler Welling, Chapman.
Nathan Brown, 138 pounds, was pinned by Taygen Fletcher, Holton. He was pinned by Izaak Meyer, Wamego.
Robert Trost received a bye in the first round in the 182-pound class. He lost by fall by Konnor Trannahill, Holton, and was pinned by Colby Mohr, Abilene.
Dalton Owen, 220 pounds, suffered an 8-2 loss to Clayton Stephenson, Topeka Hayden, in the first round. He lost by technical fall to Keegan McDonald, Clay center, 17-2.
Competing in the 285-pound class, Trevor Wilson, received a bye. He lost by fall to Ethan Wampler, Smoky Valley.
Jacob Doolittle, Chapman, won a 6-5 decision over Wilson.
