Thunderbirds drop pair to Tigers

ARKANSAS CITY — Limited to just two runs on six hits, the Cloud County Community College softball team opened Jayhawk Conference Division II play with a pair of road losses to Cowley College Thursday at Ed Hargrove Field.
Cowley College won the first game 10-2 and shut out the Thunderbirds 8-0 in the second game.
Cloud County, now 8-7, fell behind 2-0 in the first inning in game one.
Cowley scored one run in the second inning and four in the third to go up 7-0.
McKenna Mayhew provided the T-Birds with their only two runs in the game when she homered with Delaney Exon aboard in the top of the fourth inning.
The Tigers (10-6) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and led 10-2.
The game ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
Taylor Dekok pitched all five innings for Cloud County in taking the loss. She gave up 10 runs, five earned, on eight hits and struck out one.
The T-Birds were limited to three hits.
Cowley's Ashlynn Mercer tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game.
The Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Cowley got a three-run home run and a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-0 and end the game.
Kyra Meyer suffered the loss for the T-Birds. She allowed eight runs, three earned, on nine hits, struck out three and walked one.
Shayna Fila had two of Cloud County's three hits in the game.
