#2 Centralia defeat #3 Clifton-Clyde, deliver brutal first loss, 63-35

Posted

The number three ranked Clifton-Clyde girls basketball team suffered their first loss of the season, falling 64-35 to number two ranked Centralia last Friday.

The normally stalwart Eagle offense struggled to launch for the entire first half, scoring only two points in the first quarter, falling behind 28-2, with the first points coming late into the quarter.

Centralia’s lead would continue to grow despite Clifton-Clyde finally finding an offense, with the Panthers expanding their lead as they outscored the Eagles 13-8 in the second quarter to enter halftime 41-10.

The 41 first half points would be the thirds most points given up, behind the 47 and 51 total points against St. John’s/Tipton and Rock Creek.

Despite outscoring the Panthers in the third quarter, time would not be on their side as the Eagles entered the fourth quarter behind 24-53.

As the Eagles continued to establish an offense, both teams went to the benches for playing time. Both teams scored 11 points as Centralia coasted to their largest win of the season, putting the Panthers arguably as the number one team in Class 1A Division I.

Sevy Wurtz led in scoring with 15 points, rebounds with five, and picking up two steals.

Myles Hammond had eight points.

Lillian Steinbrock had seven points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Eagles will travel to Frankfort to take on the 4-3 Wildcats in Twin Valley League Competition. Competition start time is 4 p.m.
