A big second half propelled the Clifton-Clyde High School girls’ basketball team to a 67-51 home win over Rock Creek on December 20.
Clifton-Clyde led just 28-24 at halftime, but outscored Rock Creek 39-17 in the second half in pulling away to the win over the Mustangs.
The Eagles, ranked third in Class 1A-Division I, heads into semester break at 6-0 and will return on January 3 when they host Centralia in a Twin Valley League game.
Rock Creek, which was ranked seventh in Class 4A, suffered its first loss of the season, and is now 3-1 going into the break.
Clifton-Clyde led the game 16-11 after one quarter of play.
Rock Creek tossed in 13 points in the second period to 12 for the Eagles, to close the gap to 28-24.
The Eagles limited the Mustangs to 10 points in the third quarter, and scored 19 to open up a 47-34 lead.
Clifton-Clyde poured in 20 points in the final stanza and Rock Creek scored 17.
Sevy Wurtz led the way for the Eagles with 29 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. She was 9 of 15 from the field and eight of nine from the free throw line.
Mylee Hammond tossed in 14 points for Clifton-Clyde.
Lillian Steinbrock finished with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Clifton-Clyde rolled to an 80-47 victory over St. John’s/Tipton on December 17.
The Eagles raced to a 22-6 first-quarter lead.
Clifton-Clyde doubled up the Blujays 28-15 in the second period to make it a 50-20 game at halftime.
Scoring 17 points in the third quarter and surrendering 10, the Eagles stretched the lead to 67-30.
St. John’s/Tipton outscored Clifton-Clyde 17-13 in the final quarter.
Wurtz hit 12 of 17 field goal attempts on her way to scoring 28 points. She also had six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Hammond was 5 of 11 from three-point range and chipped in 18 points.
Paige Joy also scored 18 points for the Eagles on eight of nine shooting from the floor.
