Clifton-Clyde earns first round bye, defeats Linn, falls to Axtell

After splitting a pair of Twin Valley League road games to wrap up the regular season, the Clifton-Clyde High School boys’ basketball team is seeded fourth in the Class 1A-Division I sub-state tournament.

Clifton-Clyde, which fell 70-60 to Axtell, ranked third in Class 1A-Division II, on February 21 and downed Linn 54-47 in a makeup game on February 22, is 14-6 heading into sub-state play.

The Eagles received a bye in the opening round of sub-state and will host the winner of the Rural Vista-Washington County game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Burlingame also received a bye.

In the other first-round game played last Tuesday night, Troy hosted Mankato-Rock Hills. The winner plays Burlingame on Monday.

The championship game will be played March 8 at Centralia.

In the final game of the regular season, Clifton-Clyde rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off Linn.

Clifton-Clyde had a slim 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Scoring 14 points in the second stanza to 13 for Linn, the Eagles led 26-24 at halftime.

With leading scorer Jack Skocny sitting out much of the third period due to foul trouble, Clifton-Clyde managed just seven points.

Linn tossed in 10 points in the period, and led 34-33.

Clifton-Clyde then poured in 21 points in the final quarter, to 13 for Linn, to capture the win.

Skocny scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Kye Chase finished with 12 points and four rebounds for Clifton-Clyde.

Trextin Koch added eight points.

Clifton-Clyde finished 8-2 in league play.

With the regular season Twin Valley League title on the line, Clifton-Clyde fell to Axtell.

Axtell went unbeaten in league play.

Clifton-Clyde trailed Axtell 18-11 after one quarter of play and 40-27 at halftime.

Axtell tossed in 23 points in the third quarter, to 14 for Clifton-Clyde, to make it 63-41.

Clifton-Clyde added 19 points in the fourth period to seven for Axtell.

Skocny finished with 29 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals.
