Concordia football loses to Wamego 49-6

Posted

Hosting Wamego for the first part of a two-game home stretch, the Concordia High School football team fell to the Red Raiders 49-6.

After Concordia received the opening kickoff, the Panthers had a promising drive before a fumble gave Wamego the ball, and Wamego scored on their first drive to make it 7-0. A three-and-out forced the Panthers to punt the ball, which gave way for another Red Raider to make it 14-0 to end the first quarter.

A Panther punt to start the second quarter gave way to another Wamego touchdown drive, to make it 21-0 with 8:29 to go in the half. Concordia responded with a solid drive of their own, but was still forced to punt. Wamego bled the rest of the clock in the second quarter but scored with 18 seconds left, as the Panthers trailed 28-0 entering halftime.

Wamego muffed the Panthers’ onside kick attempt, which gave Concordia the ball, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize and had to punt. The Red Raiders quickly capitalized and scored another touchdown, to make it 35-0. After another Panther punt, Wamego got into the red zone, but Theodore Cody punched the ball out to give Concordia the ball right back.

Another Panther three-and-out followed by a terrible bounce on the punt put Wamego on the Panther 10-yard line, with Wamego scoring three plays later to make it 42-0. A fumble on a Panther toss play gave Wamego the ball back, and Wamego bled the rest of the third quarter before yet another touchdown ended the third quarter with Concordia trailing 49-0.

Concordia opened the fourth quarter with the lone bright spot of the game; after a great return at the end of the third put the Panthers in Red Raider territory, Ryker Wildeman scored a four-yard touchdown run to make it 49-6. And with a running clock for the rest of the fourth quarter, the Panthers fell 49-6 for their fifth straight loss.

Jett Flax went 9-for-15 passing for 65 yards. Wildeman led in rushing with 53 yards on six carries and a touchdown; Braytin Hake had 18 carries for 29 yards; Matthew Naillieux had 10 yards on six carries. Liam McNutt led in receiving yards with 33 on four catches; Wildeman had 24 yards on three catches; Kale Schroeder had two receptions for eight yards. Schroeder led in tackles with 14, including one for a loss; Wildeman, Naillieux, Cody, and Brooks Kindscher all had five tackles; Jerrik Williams and Hake had three; Landen Jorgensen and Kasey Pearson had two; Brady LaBarge, Zackarie Stovall, Martin Lesslie, and McNutt all had one. Kindscher and Williams each had a fumble recovery.
