CHAPMAN — Battling the intense late-summer heat to open the season, the Concordia High School girls tennis team picked up a pair of wins in each of the first two meets of the season, competing with a mix of very familiar and unfamiliar schools.
At Chapman, in number one singles, McKayla Cherney went 0-3.
In number two singles, Rayla Studt went 0-3.
In number one doubles, Kinzee Motes and Alexa Jordan went 1-3 and took fourth place. After a 6-3 loss to start the day, the pair picked up a 6-3 win over Maggie Todd and Kambell Franke of Baldwin, before ending the day with a 6-1 loss.
In number two doubles, Jazlyn Hendershott and Bailey Conner went 1-2 and took fourth. After a 6-4 loss to open the meet, the duo picked up a strong 6-1 win over Allison Barnds and Marina Goncalves of Baldwin, before closing the day on a 6-0 loss.
At Ellsworth for the first varsity meet of the year, the Panthers took seventh in the eight-team meet.
In number one singles, McKayla Cherney went 0-3, falling 8-0, 8-1, and 8-4.
In number two singles, Rayla Studt went 0-3, dropping each match 8-0.
In number one doubles, Kinzee Motes and Alexa Jordan went 1-2. After dropping match one 8-1 and match two 8-3, the pair defeated Kiera Ehmke and Maycee Wasinger of Hutchinson Trinity.
In number two doubles, Jazlyn Hendershott and Bailey Conner went 1-2. After dropping match one 8-0 and match two 8(2)-7, the duo defeated Marah Bargdill and Piper Deal of Trinity.
“It was a warm day with a heat advisory,” said head coach John Turner. “Our games were moved up to 9 a.m. McKayla, #1 singles, played her first tennis matches today. She improved on every game today. Kinzee/Alexa, #1 doubles, had an 8-2 win over Trinity Catholic. Jazlyn/Bailey, #2 doubles, went to tie-breakers twice today and had an 8-7(3) win over Trinity Catholic.”
