Eagle girls dominate Washington County, fall to Doniphan West

Posted

Splitting a week of TVL action with a home game versus Doniphan West and a road game at Washington County, the Clifton-Clyde girls basketball team moved to 13-7 on the year entering the final stretch of the regular season.

Versus Doniphan West, the Eagles lost 47-43.

In a cold start for both teams, with the score being 4-2 Mustangs halfway through the quarter, Eden Close was the only one with points for Clifton-Clyde, coming from the free throw line. Paige Joy made a pair of free throws with 1:05 left to make it 8-4. A 5-0 Mustang spurt made it 13-4 after one quarter.

The first basket of the game for the Eagles came in the second quarter on a Joy jumper with 6:13 remaining, to make it 13-6. A Sevy Wurtz and-one made it 18-8, and after a pair of DW baskets another Wurtz layup made it 23-10 at halftime. Clifton-Clyde was 3/20 from the field in the first half.

A Joy basket to open the third quarter made it an 11-point game, but it was Sevy Wurtz who took over the workload for the Eagles, making her first three baskets of the quarter and cutting the lead to single figures, 28-19. Both teams would go back and forth on the offensive end, but a Wurtz three cut the lead to seven, 33-26, and also a layup to make it a 35-28 game entering the fourth quarter.

The back and forth continued in the fourth quarter, with the Mustangs taking a double-digit lead, but they were never able to put the Eagles away. A Calyn Baker three halfway through the quarter made it 43-35 DW. After a Mustang basket, the Eagles went on a 8-2 run and made it a four-point game with a minute to go. Phoenyx Burnett stole the ball, but the Eagles couldn’t convert on the offensive end, and taking too long to foul the Eagles’ comeback fell short 47-43.

Sevy Wurtz had 30 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Paige Joy had eight points, two rebounds and a block.

Calyn Baker had three points and two steals.

Eden Close had two points, four rebounds and an assist.

Versus Washington County, the Eagles won 54-27.

After a slow offensive start for both teams, it would be the Eagles scoring first with 5:21 in the opening quarter, thanks to a pair of Paige Joy free throws. Clifton-Clyde would then go on a 7-2 run for the rest of the quarter to take a 9-2 lead to close the opening stanza.

A Tiger free throw to start the second quarter didn’t slow down the Eagles, who proceeded to go on a 9-4 run to push it to an 18-7 lead. Over the final three minutes the Eagles only gave up two baskets, as Clifton-Clyde took a 25-13 lead entering halftime.

The Eagles officially pulled away to open the third quarter, with a 21-0 run to push it to a 46-13 lead due in large part to their stifling defense and fast break offense converting baskets, and they would keep the Tigers off the board until 2:18 left in the quarter. With a Calyn Baker free throw as time expired, the Eagles led 49-15 entering the fourth quarter.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter and the reserves coming in, the Eagles pick up their third straight win with a 54-27 victory.

Sevy Wurtz led in scoring with a season high 42 points, seven rebounds, 12 steals and a block.

Eden Close and Calyn Baker each had four points and combined for six rebounds and four steals.

Paige Joy and Ellie Wurtz each had two points and combined for four rebounds and four steals.
