Eagles boys basketball wins preseason tournament

HERINGTON — Participating in the four-day, five-team tournament hosted by Herington, the Clifton-Clyde boys basketball team won all three games and took first place.

On the first day, Tuesday, the Eagles defeated the number nine-ranked Rural Vista 60-56.

The Heat had a strong start to the game, scoring 20 points to the Eagles’ 11 in the first quarter, to take a nine-point lead early in the game. Both teams leveled out in the second, but the Heat built the lead slightly by outscoring the Eagles 16-14 to take a 36-24 halftime lead. The Eagles were able to take a chunk out of the lead in the third quarter, limiting the Heat to only nine points as they scored 14 to make it a six-point game, 45-39. Clifton-Clyde was finally able to break through with a late surge, scoring a game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, taking the lead and holding out for a 60-56 win.

Emitt Tiemeyer led in scoring with 16 points, adding six rebounds and two assists.

Luke Nobert had 13 points with five rebounds.

Landon Begnoche had nine points with seven rebounds and a team high eight assists and two steals.

On Thursday, the Eagles defeated Centre-Lost Springs 67-27.

The first quarter was close to open the game, as both teams were getting a feel for their opponent, Clifton-Clyde held a 13-7 lead over the Cougars.

The Eagles pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Centre 17-8 for the quarter and taking a 30-15 point lead at halftime.

Any thoughts of a comeback for the Cougars got squashed in the third quarter; the Eagles scored a game-high 25 points in the third quarter while holding Centre to only nine points, pushing their lead to 31 points, 55-24.

With a running clock while icing the game, the Eagles scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and held the Cougars to just three points, handing them the lowest scoring offensive performance of the year so far, as the Eagles won 67-27.

Luke Nobert had 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Gage LeClair (12) had 14 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Ethan Sacco had nine points, three assists and three rebounds.

In the championship against Chase County, the Eagles won 56-46.

The Eagles had a strong start to the game, more than doubling the points of the Bulldogs in the first quarter, outscoring Chase County 20-9 in the first quarter.

Things slowed down a touch in the second quarter, but the Eagles still doubled the points of the Bulldogs, scoring 12 points in the quarter while the defense held Chase to only six points in the quarter, as the Eagles led 32-15 at halftime.

The Bulldog offense finally started to gain a rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Eagles in the third quarter 16-15. With one quarter still to play, the Eagles led 47-31.

Needing a miracle in the fourth quarter, Chase was unable to break through as the Eagles were able to hold off and score just enough to keep the Bulldogs at bay, winning 56-46.

Nobert had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Landon Begnoche had 13 points, six rebounds and five steals.
