Lady Eagles go 2-1, earn fifth place in TVL tournament

FRANKFORT - Junior guard Sevy Wurtz knocked down a shot with three seconds on the clock to give the Clifton-Clyde High School girls’ basketball team a 46-44 victory over Axtell in the fifth-place game of the Twin Valley League Tournament played January 25.

Clifton-Clyde trailed Axtell 42-36 with under a minute to play in the game.

Back-to-back three-point shots by Lillian Steinbrock and Wurtz pulled Clifton-Clyde even with Axtell at 42-42.

Wurtz then came up with a steal and scored to give Clifton-Clyde a 44-42 advantage.

Axtell tied the game at 44-44 with 20 seconds remaining.

Clifton-Clyde called a timeout and then got the ball to Wurtz, who scored the winning basket.

Wurtz finished the game with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Paige Joy scored 10 points for Clifton-Clyde, eight in the fourth quarter.

Calyn Baker added eight points.

Katelyn Detweiler led Axtell with 11 points. Maggie Strathman scored 10 points.

Clifton-Clyde, seeded third in the tournament, received a bye in the opening round and was then upset 63-57 by Valley Heights in the quarterfinals.

The Eagles bounced back to defeat Blue Valley-Randoph 65-44 on January 23 to set up the matchup against eighth-seeded Axtell.

Top-seeded Centralia rolled past second-seeded Hanover 71-43 in the championship game.

Doniphan West defeated Valley Heights 56-41 in the third-place game and Linn knocked off Blue Valley in the seventh-place game.

Clifton-Clyde led Axtell 14-11 after one quarter of play.

Axtell outscored Clifton-Clyde 10-6 in the second stanza to go up 21-20 at halftime.

Clifton-Clyde was limited to three points in the third quarter. Axtell scored six points, and led 29-23.

Pouring in 23 points over the final eight minutes, Clifton-Clyde rallied for the win.

Blue Valley 44

Racing to a 29-20 halftime lead, the Clifton-Clyde Eagles posted a second win this season over the Blue Valley Rams.

Blue Valley managed just one free throw in the first quarter, and trailed 14-1.

Clifton-Clyde added 15 points in the second stanza, to eight for the Rams.

The Eagles outscored Blue Valley 18-17 in the third quarter to make it a 47-26 game.

Each team scored 18 points in the final period.

Wurtz led the way for the Eagles with 32 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

Steinbrock scored 13 points.

Baker had eight rebounds to go with six points.

Balynn Brockman scored 14 points for Blue Valley.
