Lady Panthers pick up first league win at Chapman, 39-33

CHAPMAN — Picking up its second straight win, the Concordia High School girls’ basketball team defeated Chapman on the road, 39-33, in an NCKL matchup.

Getting on the board first, the Panther’s defense kept the Fighting Irish off the scoreboard until 3:03 was left in the first quarter, almost five minutes in. The Panthers went on a 7-2 run to close the quarter with a 11-4 lead.

Both defenses would keep each other off the scoreboard as much as they could, only scoring a combined 12 points in the quarter, with Chapman scoring eight to Concordia’s four, thanks to a pair of Irish threes. The Panthers led 15-12 at halftime.

The offensive struggles would dissipate in the third quarter for Concordia, with the Panthers building an 11 point lead, 28-17. Neither team would score in the final two minutes as Concordia led going into the fourth quarter, 28-19.

The Panthers maintained their lead throughout the quarter, even getting their lead up to 10 with less than three minutes remaining. Chapman tried its best to get into position, but a layup by Jaylin Roush with 1:08 remaining to secure an 11-point lead would be too much for the Irish to overcome. A quick Irish steal, a three-pointer, and a layup would made the final score 39-33 as Concordia secured its first NCKL win of the season.

Roush led with 23 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

Charlize Cash had nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and seven steals.

Rylie Jessup had four points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

The Panthers will face off against Clay Center on the road Friday, January 31. Competition starts at 4:30 p.m.
