Picking up its fourth win of the season and a season sweep of Chapman, the Concordia High School girls’ basketball team defeated the Irish with a strong 48-32 victory.
The Panthers opened the game with some of their best basketball of the year, scoring nine straight points to open the game and holding the Irish off the board until only 3:26 remained in the first quarter. Chapman would only score once more in the quarter and the Panthers ended the first quarter leading 14-5.
Things would continue to roll for the Panthers, allowing only five points in the second quarter, as they held their lead. Chapman continued to struggle to score, until halfway through the quarter when the Irish converted a pull-up shot. The Panthers’ defense was immaculate but the offense couldn’t always capitalize. Concordia entered halftime with a 29-10 lead.
Both offenses would come out of the locker rooms slow, but things would start to pick up. Chapman was able to get some offense going, but the Panthers were able to outscore the Irish in the quarter 11-9 to take a 40-19 point lead entering the fourth.
The Panther home crowd was able to see some different faces on the court. Kinzee Motes, Addison Abitz, McKayla Cherney and Asia Garcia were all able to come into the game and get playing time. The Panthers were able to keep Chapman off the scoreboard until a late surge by the Irish gave the final score of 48-32.
“We were aggressive from the start and really set the tone defensively,” said head coach Trey Kuhlman. “Jaylin Roush has given us great presence down low. … Charlize Cash has been constantly getting her teammates involved on the offensive side of the ball as well as ramping up the defensive pressure. … Rylie Jessup has found a new motor offensively and has been very aggressive for us here recently. … We have a huge test this Friday at Rock Creek. They are currently tied for first in league play.”
Roush had 24 points, 13 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Jessup had seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Avery Kueker had six points and four steals.
The Panthers will travel to Rock Creek to take on the number eight-ranked Rock Creek Mustangs Friday, February 14.
