INDEPENDENCE - Picking up another season sweep and winning their third straight game, the Cloud County Community College Lady Thunderbirds defeated the Independence Community College Pirates 64-50.
Both squads kept the game close, with Cloud behind 15-14 after the first quarter.
The middle quarters were where Cloud did its damage, outscoring the Pirates in both quarters and taking a commanding 20-point lead to enter the fourth quarter.
Cloud was able to keep the Pirates at bay, not allowing any miracle run on the way, to pick up their 10th conference win of the season.
Talasia Thomas had 22 points and seven rebounds.
DaNae Crosby had 10 points and five assists.
Shea Wurtz had 10 points, 12 rebounds and a steal.
The Thunderbirds will travel to Hutchinson Saturday, February 15 for a matchup with the Blue Dragons. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
A strong second half was able to lift the Cloud County Lady Thunderbirds to a home victory over Colby Community College, 58-48, splitting the season series.
Striking first with a Lilliana Petersen three ball, Cloud would build up a 10-3 lead early on. Colby would respond with its own run, scoring 10 points to close the quarter to the T-Birds’ four, as the T-Birds led 14-13 after one quarter.
Colby took the lead to open the second quarter and the entire quarter would be a slugfest. Cloud finally took the lead back with 52 seconds remaining, thanks to a Shea Wurtz jumper. A Colby free throw and missed Cloud layup sent both teams into halftime with the T-Birds leading 30-29.
The dual continued to start the third quarter with neither team able to pull away. Colby made a layup to start the quarter and took the lead. With four ties and three lead changes in the quarter, it would be the T-Birds who, after regaining the lead with one minute left in the quarter, would close out the quarter with three additional points to lead 41-37 entering the fourth.
Colby would keep the game close early in the fourth, but two free throws by TiAna Davis with 46 seconds remaining would give the T-Birds the cushion they needed, bumping their lead to eight. Two sets of free throws for Cloud would give the final score of 58-48.

Wurtz had 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
