After a promising offseason and summer, the Concordia High School Girls’ Golf team is looking to take some big strides and surpass expectations set for them this year.
Girls’ golf officially kicks off the fall sports season with the State Golf Preview in Hutchinson on Thursday, Aug. 28, and will have better representation this time around and head coach Gene Rundus is feeling good about the team this year.
“As a coach, I’m nervously optimistic,” Rundus said. “A lot of the girls put work in over the summer, and competed in some tournaments. Mya (Niehues) has been a champion again over the summer, and all that hard work is paying off. We hope to get a full team (to state) and compete. We only took Mya to the preview last year, ”
The team has a lot of experience competing for the varsity level, with some talented underclassmen showing the heat they plan to bring to tournaments.
“We expect to win. We want to win our home tournament, and that’s very important to the girls and to the coaches,” Rundus said. “We’ll go out and do the best we can to win that tournament… and all the girls will get to participate, and they will get to participate at their level of comfort.”
Rundus continued, “We’re not going to put people out there in positions where they’re set up to fail.”
This approach to competition stems from the still-young team, with seven underclassmen and juniors, and five seniors for the team. That first home meat Rundus mentioned will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Concordia, and the rest of the season will be spent on the road for competition. Later in the year, the team will travel to regional competitions Oct. 13-14, with times and locations yet to be determined.
