CLAY CENTER — Heading to Clay Center for the second time of the season, the Concordia High School boys tennis team picked up a pair of silver medals at the Clay Center quad.
In number one singles, Evan Bombardier went 2-1 to earn second place. Starting with an 8-1 loss, Bombardier picked up two wins, 8-3, and 8-1, to take home a silver medal.
In number two singles, Hunter Nielander went 2-1 and earned second place as well. Nielander won his first match 8-7(5), before dropping match two, 8-0, then closing the day with an 8-5 win to pick up a silver medal.
In number one doubles, the duo of Carter Pickel and Noah Wood went 0-3 on the day, falling 8-0, 8-1, 8-0.
In number two doubles, the team of Eli Henderson and Jagger Johnson went 0-3, falling 8-0, 8-1, and 8-5.
Ellinwood won as a team with 24 points, winning number one doubles and number two singles and doubles. Clay Center finished second with 19 points. Concordia finished third with 10 points, and Marysville finished fourth with seven points.
Facing off in the eight-team Ron Dahlsten Tennis Classic/Smoky Valley Invite in Lindsborg, the boys tennis team competed in the division-less tournament and got three wins overall.
Evan Bombardier and Hunter Nielander competed in the 16-man singles bracket. Bombardier finished in 13th. After suffering two straight 8-4 losses, he picked up an 8-0 win over teammate Nielander, and an 8-4 in the 13th place match. Nielander had two straight 8-1 losses before falling to Bombardier to end his day.
The duos of Carter Pickel and Noah Wood and Eli Henderson and Jagger Johnson competed in the 16-team doubles bracket. Pickel and Wood lost two straight matches, 8-0 and 8-1, before winning 8-2 in match three, before falling 8-5 to end the day. Henderson and Johnson went 0-3 on the day, losing 8-0, 8-3, and 8-5 in the doubles bracket.
