Falling to below a .500 winning percentage for the second time of the season, the Cloud County Community College women’s basketball team dropped back-to-back games to extend the losing streak to four to open conference play with losses to Cowley and Dodge City.
Against Dodge City, the T-Birds fell 97-71.
For the first four minutes of the first quarter, it was a battle to gain control of the game, with Cloud holding a lead early before Dodge City went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead. Dodge City was able to build and hold onto that lead due to efficient shooting to end the first quarter up 22-13.
Cloud eliminated the lead quickly to start the second quarter, with a 9-3 run in the first two minutes to make it a three-point game. Dodge City would try to build a lead, but Cloud would just chip it back down. After being down seven points with four minutes to go, the T-Birds went on a 9-3 spurt to close the first half down one, 39-38.
The Lady Conqs pulled away in the second half, going on a 12-2 run to start and building a 22-point lead less than eight minutes into the quarter. Dodge City shot 70 percent from the floor in the third quarter as they entered the fourth quarter up 73-53, but the fourth was more of the same as Cloud dropped their fourth straight KJCCC matchup.
Camiah Muldrow led in scoring with 28 points, with six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Leila Washington had 12 points, with three rebounds and a block.
Versus Cowley, the T-Birds fell 86-81.
Cloud jumped out to a lead early, with the T-birds taking a 10-point lead six minutes into the first quarter, 13-3. Cloud was able to hold onto that cushion, but an 8-2 run by Cowley to end the first made it a four-point game, 22-18, to end the first quarter.
The T-Birds rebuilt the lead in the second quarter, building an 11-point lead four minutes into the quarter. Cowley proceeded to score 15 straight points to take the lead in just three minutes of game time. Cloud fought to grab the lead back and with a Shea Wurtz jumper went into the locker room up one, 43-42.
The T-Birds opened the second half by taking a six-point lead and held the lead all the way until just over one minute remaining in the third. An and-one gave Cowley the lead, and they entered the fourth quarter leading 62-61.
The Tigers pushed the momentum and took a 15-point lead with a 16-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Cloud would do their best to chip away at the lead, getting it down to four, but ran out of time as the Tigers were able to steal away this win, 86-81.
Leila Washington led in scoring with 19 points, five rebounds, with two assists.
Sofija Todorovic had 13 points, with seven rebounds and three assists.
Wurtz had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
