HOISINGTON — Five wrestlers captured individual titles in leading the Concordia High School Panthers to a first-place finish in the Hoisington Corner Classic on December 20.
Carter Eakins, 138 pounds; Drew Sterrett, 144 pounds; Deekon Holbert, 150 pounds; Drake Blochlinger, 157 pounds; and Tracer Murdock, 285 pounds, reported first-place finishes for Concordia.
The Panthers scored 181 points in the tournament. Great Bend was second with 170 and Hoisington was third with 116.5.
Concordia posted three tournament wins in a week heading into the semester break.
The Panthers return to action on January 11 at the Salina South Invitational.
Eakins (18-2) won five straight matches on his way to placing first. He pinned Isaak Vogel, Cimarron, in 40 seconds; pinned Trevin Maciel, Great Bend, in 3:13; won by technical fall, 17-1, over DJ Wyant, Hoisington; pinned Samuel Doze, Hoisington, in 44 seconds; and then pinned Jacob Olvedo, Holcomb, in 3:04 in the championship match.
Sterrett, who is 19-0 this season, pinned Fabian Delacruz, Liberal, in 2:59 in the opening round. He pinned Xander Houseman, Ellinwood, in 29 seconds; pinned William Martin, Stafford, in 15 seconds; pinned Nic Luna, Holcomb, in 10 seconds; and won an 8-3 decision over Landon Beaver, Hoisington, in the title match.
Holbert (11-5) went 2-0 on his way to placing first. He pinned Lane Schwab, Stafford, in 35 seconds and pinned Isaac Hernandez, Cimmaron, in 1:43.
Blochlinger (17-1) pinned Knoxly Nettleingham, Hoisington, in 1:03; pinned Kyler Johnson, Hoisington, in 33 seconds; pinned Oscar Pablo, Liberal, in 3:24; and pinned Blake Stein, Great Bend, in 3:38 in the match for first place.
Murdock (18-1) won five straight matches by fall, all in under a minute, on his way to placing first. He pinned Onesimo Aragon, Cimarron, in 24 seconds; pinned Julian Adame, Liberal, in 54 seconds; pinned James Bishop, Holcomb, in nine seconds; pinned Joseph Wilder, Larned, in 25 seconds; and pinned Josue Bustamante, Great Bend, in 54 seconds in the championship match.
Concordia had Rush LeDuc, 120 pounds; Tre Hamiel, 175 pounds; and Max Johnson, 215 pounds, place second.
LeDuc (13-6) pinned Fisher Yeager, Cimarron, in 1:10; lost by fall to Hayden Liles, Great Bend; won a 16-14 decision over Jai-Sean Phillips, Larned, in the championship bracket; and lost by fall to Liles in the championship match.
Hamiel (16-4) pinned Josue Valdez, Stafford, in 53 seconds; pinned Ervin Marquez, Cimarron, in 31 seconds; won by technical fall over Nathan Hammeke, Ellinwood, 19-3; pinned Maxx Steffan, Great Bend, in 1:15 in the championship bracket; and lost by technical fall, 16-1, to Teron Kraft, Hoisington, in the first-place match.
Johnson (13-7) pinned Ben Vogel, Cimarron, in 1:36; pinned Ethan Bauer, Eureka, in 36 seconds; pinned Jackson Mead, Stafford, pinned Ethan Stegman, Great Bend, in 29 seconds; and lost a 7-4 decision to Mathew Trejo, Liberal, in the title match.
Bryson Sorensen won his final two matches to place fifth in the 126-pound class for Concordia.
Francisco Ayala, 132 pounds, and Braytin Hake, picked up two wins each on their way to placing sixth for the Panthers.
Quinn Kymer finished sixth in the 113-pound class.
Grant Strecker, 190 pounds, was seventh.
Girls
The Concordia girls finished sixth in Corner Classic with 75 points.
Liberal won the team title with 176.5 points. Hoisington was second with 172 and Scott Community was third with 132.
Bridgett Blochlinger, 120 pounds, and Gabi Lange, 135 pounds, each placed third individually for Concordia.
Blochlinger (11-4) pinned Jaidyn Stevenson, Hoisington, in 1:24; pinned Jenna Borror, Ellinwood, in 5:00; pinned Annika Hinz, Hoisington, in 3:11; lost by fall to Brooklyn Gossman, Scott Community; and pinned Bela Cofer, Cimarron, in 3:25 in the third-place match.
Lange (16-2) pinned Alyssa Bogner, Cimarron, in 58 seconds; pinned Liliana Santiago, Liberal, in 1:47; pinned Shayla Hageman, Plainville, in 38 seconds; lost by fall to Cara Herbert, Larned,; and pinned Tatum Brown, Scott Community, in 3:54 in the third-place match.
Concordia had Ruby Genereux, 145 pounds; Airiana Wogomon, 130 pounds; and Harley Weathersbee, 235 pounds, place fourth.
Genereux (13-6) pinned Nathalea Mancillas, Holcomb, in 2:00; pinned Kaydence Demal, Great Bend, in 2:33; pinned Lillian Gradig, Hoisington, in 1:56; lost by fall to Dayanara Jimenez, Scott Community; and lost by fall to Lillian Garcia, Plainville, in the mach for third place.
Wogomon (12-8) pinned Sterling Dohe, Plainville, in 2:35; pinned Angelica Rangel, Cimarron, in 29 seconds; pinned Cambree Erb, Ellinwood, in 4:53; lost a 13-2 major decision to Tristin Compton, Hoisington; and lost by fall to Amya Parker, in the match for third place.
Weathersbee (8-8) lost by fall to Aileen Figueroa, Liberal; pinned Genesis Trigueros, Concordia, in 35 seconds; pinned Brisa Molinar, Cimarron, in 2:29; pinned A’Tejia Thomas, Larned, in 4:59; and lost by all to Emma Hahn, Ellinwood, in the third-place match.
Brexlynn Koch (11-9) won three matches and placed fifth for Concordia in the 125-pound class.
Isabelle Alexander finished fifth in the 190-pound class.
Republic County Duals
Boys
Posting a 5-0 record, the Concordia boys placed first in the Republic County Holiday Duals on December 17 in Belleville.
The Panthers opened the tournament by defeating Nemaha Central, 72-12. They downed Southeast of Saline 48-23 and Republic County, 45-36.
Advancing to the championship bracket, the Panthers knocked off Beloit 60-254 and then toppled Hill City, 50-30.
Concordia had Kymer, 113 pounds; LeDuc, 120 pounds; Eakins, 138 pounds; and Sterrett, 144 pounds, finish 5-0 in the tournament.
Blochlinger, 157 pounds; Hamiel, 175 pounds; and Murdock, 285 pounds, were each 4-1.
Sorensen, 126 pounds; Ayala, 132 pounds; Holbert, 150 pounds; Hake, 165 pounds; Strecker, 190 pounds; Johnson, 215 pounds, each finished 3-2.
Girls
The Concordia girls placed third in the Republic County Holiday Duals.
Concordia defeated Nemaha Central 48-12, Southeast of Saline 42-18 and Republic County, 48-24.
The Panthers suffered a 42-30 loss to Sabetha and then fell 47-36 to Washburn Rural.
Washburn Rural placed first in the tournament and Sabetha was second.
Genereux, 145 pounds, won all five of her matches for Concordia.
The Panthers had Blochlinger, 120 pounds; Koch, 125 pounds; and Lange, 135 pounds, post 4-1 records.
Harlin Bannister, 115 pounds; Alexander, 190 pounds; and Weathersbee, 235 pounds, each finished 3-2.
Tierney Breault, 110 pounds, was 2-3.
